Newgrounds - Oppurtunities for Everyone

Posted by Rucklo - February 17th, 2012

A little over a week ago, I landed what right now is my dream job. I got hired by the video-games studio DICE (Battlefield series, Mirrors Edge...) as a VoiceOver designer.

This wouldn't have been made possible without the help of Newgrounds.com

Le story:
- It started close to two years ago, in 2010, when I flew to Philadelphia to take part of the Pico-day party. On the flight to Chicago (transfer location), I sat next to a guy who worked on DICE (and still do) as a lead-level design dev. for multiplayer. We had a good time chatting most of the flight away. By then I had started to think about what I was going to do as my final thesis, but hadn't decided yet, as it was still early. But after meeting this guy and his wife (who also worked and still works for DICE), I figured I'd give it a shot to apply for my thesis at DICE. During the latter part of summer, that's what I did, and after a few months and a some odd turns, the thesis-project happened, and started around this time one year ago now.
After the thesis was done I got contracted for a total of six months to help out with VO for BF3 and writing (audio) documentation for Frostbite 2, DICE in-house games engine.
And now, after two months off (unemployed) I get to keep working with one of the absolutely best audio-team in the games-industry (if not THE best team, considering the amount of audio-awards DICE have gotten for BF3 and BC2...).

The above was seemingly completed without the help of Newgrounds. It was just luck I ended up next to the DICE-emplyoee on the flight. I didn't actually get recommended by him for the thesis-project and created the oppurtunity myself by approaching the sound-department, and once in, I tried to snag whatever good stuff was presented in front of me.

BUT:

- As the poor student I was at the time, I would NEVER have been able to afford the trip to Philadelphia and the Pico-party, hadn't it been for the Newgrounds Revenue-system and a little push from Tom Fulp for accomodation, and beer + mental bullying from PsychoGoldfish.

To sum up what this site can be:

- Newgrounds.com comes bearing oppurtunities for individuals, crews/groups of people. There are TONS of good ways to gain a reputation through out the whole world, make important contacts and friends (maybe even your future better half?!), practise your tool(s) (yes, tool, lololol) of choise, use as a source of inspiration and even make some money that very well could be the start of your future career!

I think that some of the NG Staff would agree a little extra with the above, seeing as quite a few of them started out as fans and contributors to the site - and now they make a living helping to improve and run the site!

This is my story of how Newgrounds.com helped me to land my dream-job. I wanted to share it to bring out in the open what can happen by just socializing on a site that comes packed with oppurtunities for the users (compared to masses of sites that are just consuming...).
I'm sure there are great amounts of people out there who have similar stories. What do You hope to get out from hanging out on Newgrounds? You got a story? Share it with us! :)

It's pretty impressive, the scope of this website's power.

It has changed my life significantly (I think for the good)
A lot of significant life altering decision stem from Newgrounds.com

I knew I wasn't the only one, and we are probably 2 of thousands that have been affected positively by Tom&Friends.

Yeah, I think the key to this site being influencal in such a positive way is mainly due to Tom and the staffs attitude towards both fans and how they want things to be, on a world-scale even. They've had their run-ins with the law and whatever powers that have been ignorant/unknowing about the power of Internet.
They're doing it in a great way, and I hope for Newgrounds to keep kicking ass!

i thought you were hired as a concept artist :3

I AM BUTT DAT ISAINT OMFICIAL BICAS IT A SECRUT

I can't help gushing about the benefits of the site. No way Yu-Gi-Oh would have happened without NG, or the simple professional "tween" videos I've done, or meeting and collaborating with so many great artists.

Congrats dude that's huge!

Yeah man, so much goodness from this site. But so little recognition from the Internet for the things they've been first with. :(

Thanks. Still another week and a half before I start... can't wait! :)

Man, I do not know where to start.
Animation has been everything I always wanted to do and I feel I'm slightly improving thanks to Newgrounds. I've been inspired by artists around the world and achieved great help from some really nice Newgrounds who helped me with their artwork and voices. This site means a lot to me.
Anyways, DICE? Wow, dude! Congrats!

Newgrounders overall are a great bunch of helpful people like you've experienced, I hope we can all keep pushing each other to become better, stronger, faster SCOOOTEEEEERRRR

Badass man, congratulations.

Thank you!

Congrats Rucklo! I'm happy for you.

And yes, Newgrounds has helped many people during all this years, in terms revenue (as you said) but also exposure to the whole wide web. Look at Egoraptor, Happy Harry and Eddworld, they're all successful people that came from this site. And now you can be part of the list of successful Newgrounders.

Congrats ones again. :)

Yeah man, there's a long list of big artists who've made it with a large portion of foot in the ass from Newgrounds! The ones you mentioned are only a few. NG is a great place to showcase and get exposure. However I think it kind of feels like not enough people helps giving Newgrounds the exposure it deservers back, after making it big. I guess Newgrounds may not be the only mean that is being used to communicate their artwork, but still... But in a way I do like that NG keep having an underground-feel to it, but yeah, NG deservs a larger portion of the Internet IMO! :)
And thanks man. :)

Congratulations, the job sounds awesome :D

Thanks, it's gonna be interesting for sure! At the end of the day it's "just a job", like any other job. But it's something I really want to do right now, so for me it's a little bit more than that. Which is why I feel I want to reach out and thank Tom and Newgrounds for their part in this. :)

This was a great read man, congratulations too, BF3 is an awesome game, and the sounds are really what set it apart from every other game out there. I have a similar NG related story and definitely awe alot to this site. I will take the time to sit down and write it out one day.

thanks for sharing, and

HEREZ ISA YOUUR AMMMOOO MAAAYN" lol (seriously dialogue in original language is much cooler plz :3

haha, yeah it sounds way better if both factions would speak 100% on their own language, but when it comes down to it you don't want one side to be superior to another. if you're not speaking russian, it's an advantage to play the US-faction. Sure, you'll learn a few words, but there are quite a few variations of the recorded VO, so one line doesn't sound all too alike the other sometimes. I know I don't have a clue of what VO is what in some occations.
If you're playing PC, hook me up ("Rucklo" on battlelog) if you wanna play some day (in march when i get a computer to play at, this one i can't play at...)!

Looking forward to hearing your story of how you ended up on NG! If it doesn't show up I'll remind you to write it! :D

And here I basically just got on the BF3 bandwagon... Love the game, and am immensely proud that boss man Rucklo from newgrounds contributed to it... It's a great feeling knowing that such a popular game made use of the talents of a local Newgrounder.

While I don't have a success story that started with Newgrounds... yet... I can say if it wasn't for Newgrounds, I'd probably still be writing crappy metal songs with no drums or bass, and I probably wouldn't be writing classical or electronic music at all. Bad-Man-Incorporated introduced me to EzDrummer, which I still used today, and he was one of my earliest supporters for the music I write... And now I've just finished my first collab with him.

Not to mention the immense amount of help, tips and tricks I've gotten from the Audio Portal community. I agree... Newgrounds is an awesome place to be, and despite the skepticism of many people, is a great place to "get started".

Go Team Newgrounds!

Yeah man, the audio-community in perticluar is awesome! I've also learned a few things from the community of course! Also the people are a cool bunch to hang out with. ^___^
Staying in a community helping out and getting helped definitely is a great way to get better! :) Go Team Newgrounds!!! :D

w000 congrats ruckl0

This was late sooo, congrats.
I like how we live in a generation without borders.

Man your inspiring , i read this and thought , you know , how lucky you were with your skill in audio design , and to be totally honest i never knew newgrounds could be so good.
